Water line entering the building
With the unusual amounts of rain that we have had over the past week, outdoor construction has slowed on the B-Wing modifications.

This past week, the fire sprinkler water utility line was put in up to the interior of the building where the special room will be located for the fire suppression manifold. The final inspections by the county plumbing inspector and fire marshal and system pressure test are all scheduled for Friday, May 29. Workers have been digging a trench across our parking lot and installing the new sewer line this past week, getting ready to connect to the county main under Backlick Road. We are waiting VDOT approval to actually cut the asphalt in the street to finalize the connection. This is tentatively scheduled for the first week of June.

Measurements have been taken to enable finalization of structural steel shop drawings so that steel manufacturing may begin for the second story and the new two-story Glass Breezeway. Next week, some interior demolition of the Glass Breezeway will occur to expose the ceiling area so that we can access wiring and piping presently going through the Breezeway between buildings. The actual tear down of the present Breezeway will be done shortly after Immanuel Christian School is out for the summer.

Also next week, interior masonry work to reinforce walls, construct new walls, and put in new doorways should begin. Some wall construction is dependent on sub-floor soil tests to insure stability of the floor and walls of the B-wing portion nearest the present Victorian Courtyard.

Waiting for water

Getting the new water valves ready.
The water to the building was shut down for about 4 hours Monday, May 18 while the line for the new water supply was connected to the underground water main. The line is now complete up to just inside the building and awaits the fire marshal and county plumbing inspector approvals. We have also laid part of the new larger sanitary line and hope to finish that effort sometime next week. As soon as we receive permission from the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to make the asphalt cut to the manhole in Backlick Road, we will be hooking up the new sewage line to the county main under Backlick Road.

The electricians are busy wiring up the first floor of the B-Wing to accommodate the new room layouts and to bring in 1,200 new amps of 3-Phase High Voltage power into the building. This new power is required for the increased loads of more heating and AC, more house lighting and anticipated theater lighting increases in the Atrium and Worship Center. Our progress update includes final removal of old walls and doorways that will not be used in the redesigned “B” Wing.

School and Church to close early Monday, May 18

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

Dirt piles up as construction extends into the parking lot Monday, May 18, Immanuel Bible Church and Immanuel Christian School will close at 12:00 noon.

Early in the construction process, new water and sewer mains must be connected to the building. A decision to close the facilities at noon next Monday, weather permitting, was made in order to allow the installation of the new water main. While they are installing the new service, the building will be without water for a number of hours.

Representatives from the general contractor, Immanuel Bible Church and Immanuel Christian School negotiated the time frame for installation to stay within the construction schedule and minimize the impact on School and Church activities.

The rain date for installation is Tuesday, May 19, at 3:00pm.
